The House of Magic was one of my favorite shops growing up. I was a big magician geek (one of the few geeky things I actually outgrew) and this shop had all kinds of great magic tricks and scary accessories for me to spend my money on. Along with the Penny Arcade this became part of the Hall of Champions in the mid-nineties.

I also loved this shop. Every trip to the Magic Kingdom required a stop at this store, and usually my "kid on vacation dollars" were spent at this place. I purchased a Darth Vader, Hollywood-quality full helmet at the House of Magic for the then-princely sum of $75. It's still at my parents' house, all battered and scratched but wow what memories. Also picked up a lot of "Adams magic tricks" at this place, plaster glow-in-the-dark skulls, and a miniature tombstone that you could put your name in at the top. What memories! I miss the place. Alas, Disney has decided that Mickey sweatshirts sell out better than monster masks and magic tricks, so the House of Magic is long gone. But not forgotten!
ReplyDeleteThere was also a smaller monster mask/gothy-prop place right outside the Haunted Mansion...the Keel Boat Shop? It had some of the same stock as the House of Magic but could not compare with the House of Magic's ambiance. Now there's just some small "Madame Leota's mystic cart" or somesuch right outside the Haunted Mansion selling Jack Skellington keychains and Haunted Mansion ride music CDs. Alas.

Thanks for the comment Brian. The House of Magic will certainly not be forgotten.
